Christine:

Rod and Alan are right on with their comments.

You better be there!!!!! Smitty was “walking point” for this reunion….it was going to revolve around him….that’s his personality with us……so you have no choice….we will bring our picture’s, etc….

Semper Fi,

Bruce

Well said, Rod.

I think all of us feel like the wind has been knocked out of us by losing Smitty, and having Christine attend our reunion would indeed be very uplifting to all of us.

As I wrote Christine earlier, Eric was highly regarded by the Marines he served with. I’ll bet we all can come up with a “Smitty story” or two to share with her!

-Alan

Christine,

First of all, I want to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family on the loss of you brother, Eric, also known to us as Smitty, Batman and Maverick.  The rest of the platoon is in deep shock over his untimely death.  All of us were so much looking forward to visiting with him in San Antonio.  It’s such a tragic loss to all of us.  And YES, by all means, please make plans to attend our reunion in July in San Antonio.  I will forward the information to you.  Most of us will be there Thursday, Friday, Saturday and leave on Sunday.  Linda Fabyunky, daughter of our Gunnery Sgt., who has also passed away, will be there with her family.  I am sure Lt. Green, Bruce Pilch, Pedro Marquez and others in the platoon will want to email you after I forward this correspondence to them.  We have so many stories and pictures to share with you and your family.  I can honestly say that Eric was the backbone of this upcoming reunion, so you being there will be very uplifting to all of us.

Sincerely,

Eloy “Rod” Rodriguez

I will forward some of the pictures and correspondences from your brother.  He was special to all of us as I’m sure he was to your family.

Subject: Eric Smith & Reunion

Hi Rod,

My name is Christine Smith and I am Eric’s little sister.
I’ve been reading and hearing about the reunion in San Antonio.
I just happen to be driving cross country, from Phoenix to Boston,
and will be going right through San Antonio.  I was wondering
if it was possible for me to go to the reunion and maybe meet
some of my brothers friends.
I wouldn’t want to impose on your reunion but I would love
to talk to you guys.  You know a different Eric than I know.
I only know the man after Vietnam and you guys know the man
in Vietnam.  I would like to hear about the man was a “good Marine”.
I have recently met one of your Khe Sanh brothers here in Chandler, AZ.
His name is Earl.  He thought it would be good for me to go.  He posted
a note on the website.  I am hoping to hear from anyone who served with
my brother.  In the meantime I was reading all the blogs between my
brother and the guys and I just happen to catch your e-mail.
I hope you don’t mind that I e-mailed you.
If you could let me know if I would be welcome in San Antonio
I would appreciate it.
SF,

Eric’s sister Christine
