Subject: Reunion update
Guys-
Larry Ballard has sent me the original videos of his TV interviews and the re-interment of 2/26 chaplain’s assistant Alexander Chin (KIA at Khe Sanh). My son Bryan will transfer them to streaming video and post them on nomad81s.com. Bryan’s also setting up an e-mail link for us so that we can address messages like this to everybody with a single address.
I had a good conversation with Terry Lee Poole last week. Terry has retired from 25 years of truck driving and lives in the Atlanta area. He told me that all the years of riding in a bouncing cab took their toll on the circulation in his legs and it’s difficult for him to fly or ride anywhere anymore. He’s also survived prostate cancer. And like Maynard Sinclair and many others, Terry is being treated for PTSD a couple of times a week at the VA. He reads a lot and once he gets a replacement computer (his granddaughter got his old one), he’ll be back online. He sends his regards to his fellow platoon members.
I also talked briefly again with Maynard. He’s hit some rough patches lately with his PTSD, but was doing better when I called. He appreciates Pedro Marquez’s voicemail and will connect with him.
I also had a long call with Bob Hommer, who lives in Michigan’s upper peninsula. He retired as a school teacher, worked for several years shoeing horses, and now is just enjoying retirement. Bob was in contact not long ago with Linwood Thompson, who was grievously wounded in the DMZ in the artillery fire we encountered on 1 October 1968. Bob’s going to find Linwood’s phone number and send it to me. He also would like to attend our reunion.
Speaking of the reunion, the alleged “best looking radioman in Vietnam” (that would be Bill Ventura) has made hotel and plane reservations and will be at our reunion after all. See pic below to decide for yourself if he deserves the title:
I spent several hours trying to track down Fritz Torrey (he wasn’t on my list but I just wanted to find him.) As Coop reported, his e-mail bounces, his phone’s disconnected and he’s moved from the last address we have.
Has anybody found anyone else? Please reply to the group and let us know. We especially need good contact info on the people we’ve located whose e-mail addresses were out of date.
Also, after mucho pressure from Smitty, I’ve dug out my photo album and commenced scanning. Pix will appear on the web site soon.
Below is reunion info from Rod. Note that our platoon reunion is Thursday, July 15 through Sunday, July 18. Rod will send out more info as he gets it.
Guys, if the reunion is half as good as the phone calls I’ve had with platoon members recently, it will be pretty great.
Best and Semper Fi,
-Alan
